plant scientific research, maximizing growing efficiencies
About me
Starting the nation’s first cannabis course at a public university (University of Connecticut) was quite the challenge, but this has progressed to an additional advanced cannabis course. The advanced course is designed in a choose-your-own-adventure style allowing students to pursue the path that is of the greatest interest to them. The goal is to provide students with a self-directed education that prepares them for situations they will face in the future.
In addition to my work here, I have also taught cannabis related courses at the New York Botanical Gardens and Florida Gulf Coast University. Through all of these educational institutions it has been rewarding to see students from my class get jobs in the industry and apply what they have learned to actual situations.
I have also been the head of a plant science diagnostic lab at the University of Connecticut requiring the processing, identification and generating of reports of plants from both professional growers as well as homeowners.
This required an understanding of pathology in addition to general environmental conditions to help provide a diagnosis for the plant issue.
I work on maximizing growing efficiencies with the aid of supported scientific research.

Staying in touch with growers is also important, and my work through the extension service required me to visit with farms on site and offer suggestions to them as well as potentially collect samples to be analyzed in the lab. This is also important to inform other growers of possible threats to crops each growing season..
