For some people, the best way to get the effects of marijuana is by eating it. Unlike smoking joints, eating perfect marijuana edibles doesn’t hurt the throat or lungs.
This makes it the ideal mode of delivery for patients who need to medicate or people who are tired of smoking.
The cannabinoids in marijuana are known to soothe upset stomachs.
Hence, it is recommended to chemotherapy and HIV patients to relieve vomiting and regain their appetites.
For others, eating weed gives them a longer-lasting buzz that they can enjoy throughout the day.
The only downside is that it usually takes around an hour before the effects start to kick in. Even so, marijuana edibles provide more variety with the same potency and fewer side effects. So, how do we infuse weed to our favorite meals or snacks?
While it sounds easy, cooking marijuana can be tricky and complicated. So, to get the best results, we must learn the basics. Understanding the right way to do it increases our chances of success of making delicious weed-infused dishes. Also, it helps us avoid making common mistakes that mess up the flavor and potency.

So, in this article, we will learn the crucial steps to making the perfect marijuana edibles.
Then, know how to make the versatile cannabutter or oil which we can combine with most food. Moreover, we include some simple starter recipes to enjoy.
Basic Steps
Since marijuana is a complex plant, it needs to undergo some special processes when cooking it.
As such, these instructions help get rid of the impurities, improve its flavor, and keep its potency. So, follow these vital steps to enjoy high-quality edibles.
Clean the Weed

Before anything else, make sure that the leaves or buds are free from any pesticides.
There is nothing worse than the taste of chemicals with harmful effects ruining a good batch of weed. So, before cooking it, run it with water to give it a good cleaning.
Soak it Overnight

While some people think that this step is not necessary, soaking the weed in water overnight gets rid of the chlorophyll.
This substance makes any food that we infuse it with turn green and bitter. So, to get a clean look and taste, give the weed a good soak.
Decarboxylate it

Marijuana releases the THC and other cannabinoids when we heat or burn it.
This is the same process that occurs in smoking joints, bongs, or vapes. In tinctures and edibles, we accomplish this by finely chopping the weeds then warming it in the oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes or until it becomes dry.
In doing this step, check to make sure that the temperature stays the same since some ovens tend to fluctuate.
Basically, extreme heat ruins the weed by destroying all the cannabinoids. So, be careful that it doesn’t get too hot.
Essentially, decarboxylating the weed ensures that we activate the full potential of its psychoactive and medicinal effects.
It also makes the plant matter more easily digestible. Hence, we highly recommend applying this step when cooking edibles.
Cook it Slowly

Again, it’s vital to cook weed edibles over low heat, preferably below the boiling point. This is especially true when making cannabutter or oil.
It may take longer time but we want to avoid scorching or overcooking the weed. So, avoid this mistake to get highly-potent edibles.
Infuse it in Fats

Fats are the best compound that can hold all the desirable properties of weed. Hence, many people make cannabutter and cannaoil to capture the essence of weed.
These marijuana-infused products are ready to use and add unique flavors to any favorite recipes.
How to Make Cannabutter and Canna Oil
As mentioned, both products are essential when cooking edibles. While they differ in flavor, both are loaded with THC and other cannabinoids.
Hence, they are both great for pastries, toasts, or savory meals. When making them, it is best to follow the basic steps mentioned in the previous section to get the most out of the weed.

Cannabutter
Most people like to make cannabutter since butter is more common when it comes to availability and flavor.
Ingredients:
- To make cannabutter, we need 100 grams of butter, 100 ml of water, and 100 grams of ground leaves or 5 grams of ground buds.
Directions:
- Start by cleaning the weed, then decarboxylate it. Use a saucepan or slow cooker but make sure to keep the temperature below boiling point. First, melt the butter then add the weed. Next, simmer and stir while adding water to keep it from drying out.
The length of cooking time ranges from 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on preference. But the most people say, the longer the better.
Then, pour the mixture into a strainer to separate the plant matter. Let it sit until it cools down then refrigerate it to harden.

Canna Oil
Unlike cannabutter, canna oil uses coconut oil, hence, it has that added distinct taste.
But this type of oil has more beneficial fats and may even be healthier than butter. Hence, most health-conscious people like this option.
Ingredients:
- In every 6 grams of marijuana buds, use 1 cup of coconut oil. We can also use water as needed to keep the mixture from drying out.
Directions:
- The steps in making this recipe are basically the same as how to make cannabutter. As such, take note of the temperature that it does not go beyond the boiling point. Also, don’t forget to stir occasionally and be patient in cooking it.
5 Simple Marijuana Recipes
Now that we know the crucial steps to making great edibles, it’s time to put it to practice. Here are some of the most common and simple weed recipes that many people enjoy.
Cannabis Brownies

Pot brownies are one of the most popular edibles because they’re yummy and simple to make.
Many people who enjoy eating weed regularly make these treats either from scratch or straight from the box.
From Scratch

Using the ingredients from the kitchen is a great way to bake cannabis brownies.
For this, we need 8 pieces of 1-ounce unsweetened chocolate, 1 cup cannabutter, 1 and ½ cups flour, 5 eggs, and 3 cups sugar. We also need a tablespoon of vanilla, 1 teaspoon salt, and a cup of pecans or walnut.
To make, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit first. Then, beat eggs, sugar, and vanilla. Melt the chocolates then add it to the egg mixture together with flour and salt. Pour the batter into a lightly greased pan and cook for 35 minutes or until done.
Using Brownie Mix

For this simple recipe, use a box of brownie mix, and whatever amount of vegetable oil and eggs required by the box instructions. Also, we need an ounce of decarboxylated cannabis leaves. Add a cup of chopped walnuts if desired.
Since this recipe calls for oil, we will use this ingredient to infuse it with the marijuana leaves.
So, heat a large skillet and, in low temperature, cook the leaves by stirring them in the oil until they emit a pleasant, nutty aroma. Let the oil cool before mixing it with the rest of the ingredients.
Blend the mixture to a creamy consistency then pour it in a slightly-greased pan. Bake it at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes or until the toothpick we insert comes out dry.

Happy Flapjacks

To make happy flapjacks, get a cup of Jiffy or Bisquick mix, 1 ¼ cup of skim milk, and 1 egg. For the canna oil, use a cup of decarboxylated marijuana and cook it in 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
First, blend all ingredients and add the canna oil, then mix until the consistency becomes like paint.
Place a ladleful in a preheated skillet and lower the temperature to avoid burning it. Cook each side for 30 seconds.
Sesame Skillet Marijuana Cookie

For this simple snack recipe, prepare ¼ cup honey, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, ½ teaspoon ground ginger, and ¼ teaspoon cinnamon. We also need ¼ ounce of decarboxylated weed, and ¼ cup of toasted sesame seeds to roll the cookies in.
Simply mix all the except for the sesame seeds, then pour the batter in a large greased skillet. Cover it and cook over low heat for 5 minutes or until ready. Once cooked, remove it and allow to cool. Then cut it into desired pieces and roll in sesame seeds.
Stoner Fudge

Bake this starter recipe by using 4 cups sugar, 10 ounces evaporated milk and 1 cup cannabutter. We will also need 7 ounces of marshmallow crème, 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
To bake, combine sugar, milk, and cannabutter in a large cooking pot on medium heat. Stir constantly until it reaches 236 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, remove the pot and add chocolate chips, vanilla, and marshmallow crème. Stir until well-blended and pour in a baking pan until it cools.
This preparation makes about forty 2-inch squares. Eating just one is enough to make an average-weight person high.
Hemp Tea

Cannabis can also be enjoyed as a potent tea. To make a mug, we need a stainless-steel tea ball with a screw-on cap and 1/8 ounce of decarboxylated stem or leaves of weed.
Start by putting the weed loosely in the tea ball to allow some circulation. Then place it in a mug filled with boiling water. Let it steep for 15 minutes, remove the ball, then microwave the mug. Enjoy it with lemon, sugar, creamer, or just drink it plain.
The Perfect Marijuana Edibles
Again, eating marijuana is a great option to getting the health benefits or high that many people want. It has fewer negative effects and longer-lasting buzz. But it needs to be properly prepared and cooked to optimize its desirable qualities.
As we go through the basic steps of cooking cannabis, they seem challenging and complicated. But with enough practice, it becomes easier and more natural. Besides, these steps are vital to getting the maximum effect of the marijuana.
So, when deciding to cook with weed, consider the process first. With knowledge, we build the confidence to develop the skills. In time, we can create the best marijuana edibles that we can enjoy daily.

Have you ever used the wooden stems of the plant for smoking vegetables? Any effects when you eat the vegs? I have used it for smoking jalapenos, in combination with apple wood and it turned out very well!
Nice break down. On our 2nd batch and refining our process based on this article. Question: What’s the right order and any tips for ground buds regarding soak, grinding, and decarboxylizing? We soaked the full buds overnight first, then let them dry all day on a towel. But I wasn’t sure the next steps before cooking canna butter. The buds were still kinda of wet, so didn’t seem right to grind yet. We baked them at 200, then ground them up before simmering in butter.
Soak -> Decarbox -> Grind -> Simmer ?
What do I do if my buds and leaves are already dry,
antonio. you can use dry or wet buds. Just make sure to decarboxylate the herb before using it for edibles.
So theres no need to dry the herb after soaking It, or is that what the decarb will Do?
David,
Most of us do not soak buds. We decarb it in a sealed bag using a sous vide. some folks still decarb in an oven but, that leads to the terpenes escaping into thin air. Boiling style decarb allows terpenes to absord back into the bud.
I have made cannabutter and coconut canna using 14 gm per 2 cups oil. I tried several recipes. Only one was in able to get a buzz. I use magical butter machine. What am I doing wrong? I have copd and can’t hardly smoke anymore.
Tracey
Tracy,
When adding Cannabis to Coconut oil the recipe is fill whatever mason jar you have completely with a small air space at top. Decarboxylate the entirejar of leaf and flower matter. Allow to cool 100%,so terpenes re-enter the matter. Now; Fill jar with Coco oil and cook in water 0(sous vide) at 118 degrees for 5 days.
When this cools down so you can handle it safely, cheese cloth the oil out and put matter back in jar, refill with fresh Coco oil and sous vide for another 3 days.
That will get you a buzz. There is another extra step but, you will have to come to our support forum, to find out how to supercharge this recipe 🙂

Cannot wait to start my grow..still too cold here in Nevada..any thoughts about an outdoor grow in Northern Nevada??Dry ,alkaline soil however I plan to use Miracle grow mix only and chicken manure..any ideas?/ Love to all wherever you be
Grandma Haney,
If you are using Miracly Grow soil, you do not need to worry about the alkaline soil in Nevada. You do need to make sure and PH any water or additives to 6.5 before applying to soil.
Soil that contains fertilizer like Miracle Grow only have enough nutrition for the Veg period and must be supplemented during flowering. Careful to not over apply chicken manure. Make sure it is cured and not fresh. Hot manure will fry some roots.
Happy growing
Recently ordered 5 Northern Lights Indica from ILGM. Expect arrival any day. Not really ready to have them yet. How and how long can I keep seeds viable for up to two weeks till I finish setting up the grow area and getting it functional.
Hi Hillarie,
We advise to store the seeds in a cool, dry and dark place. Use them within a year to get the best results.
This is the first time I’ve come across a site like this one. There may be more but I don’t know about them. I like the Q & As and as soon as I can remember it, I’ll go to the forum/blog. I definitely can use the help,
I have no experience with making MJ-chocolate icecream but it sounds delicious! – I❤️GM
There is a group in DC that have edibles pop ups. They really have amazingly good edibles. Since you are so far away and wouldn’t be a competitor, maybe they would share some tips – I’m not sure if they’ve done the ice cream thing but it is worth a try. They are called mamajuana edibles and have a Facebook page. Good luck!
I like making homemade ice cream and gelato. Anyone ever try making marijuana ice cream (maybe with chocolate?). Now that it’s legal in California I have a lovely stand of plants (thanks to ILGM) and am looking forward to all manner of experimentation. I was thinking, if brownies, why not chocolate ice cream? Any advice or ideas?
I’m a lover of tea drinking being English. Good information on all of the sites. Happy growing folks, peace to all

Cheers Burt! 😀
No need to declarb if it is cooked into whatever, ad a mater of fact, no need to pre process the oil/weed mixture. The transformation of thca to thc happens with heat of cooking as long as it gets to 165~°f for a minute or two. There are many articles on the subject. Their is a Lab study that compares all different methods. ( hmm actual lab testing didn’t happen in the USA) this study explains it well.. imagine my shagrin when I forgot where I stored the link,, lol hazards of using canabis as a cancer Med. I’m now aflicted with CRS. ( can’t rember shit)
Funy
For the box brownies and pancakes I decarboxalate my flower for 1 hour at 240 ^F, then just add to mix and cook normally and works great.
What does carboxylate mean
Read the article, then ask questions
you do not carboxylate your weed?
